Nio's Battery Swap Network: 1 Million Swaps During May Holiday | EV Charging Infrastructure (2026)

Nio's battery swap services during the May Day holiday showcase the growing reliance on its power network during peak travel periods. With 1 million battery swaps, the company's infrastructure is under the spotlight, highlighting the importance of efficient and reliable charging solutions for EV users.

The May Day holiday, a peak travel period in China, saw Nio's battery swap stations complete 1,031,469 services, a slight dip from the record high during the Spring Festival. This figure underscores the increasing demand for convenient and fast charging solutions, especially during holidays when travel volumes surge.

Nio's highway charging and battery swap facilities provided over 15.43 million kWh of power, accounting for 16.3% of the total EV charging and swapping volume on China's highways during the holiday. This highlights the significant role Nio's infrastructure plays in supporting long-distance travel and the growing popularity of battery swap services among EV users.

The company's 1,035 highway battery swap stations saved users over 220,984 hours of waiting time, a 20% increase from the previous year. This efficiency is crucial for travelers, especially those on long-distance trips, as it reduces the time spent waiting for battery swaps.

Over 220,000 users relied entirely on battery swap services during their long-distance road trips, and over 130,000 users drove more than 1,000 kilometers during the holiday. This trend indicates a shift towards more efficient and convenient travel options, with battery swap services playing a pivotal role.

Nio's public charging network also experienced significant growth in usage, with over 87% of the power charged at its stations serving users of other EV brands. This demonstrates the network's versatility and its ability to cater to a wide range of EV users.

Looking ahead, Nio is expanding its infrastructure footprint, planning to fully connect the Hexi Corridor section of its Silk Road battery swap route on May 10. The full connection of the Silk Road route is expected in the second half of the year, enabling users to travel to all provincial-level administrative regions in the Chinese mainland relying solely on battery swap services.

Nio is also preparing for its next phase of infrastructure upgrades, with plans to begin large-scale deployment of its fifth-generation battery swap stations in July and August. These new stations will support a wider range of vehicle wheelbases and be compatible with vehicles from Nio, Onvo, and Firefly.

The upcoming launch of the ES9 on May 27, slightly ahead of schedule, further underscores Nio's commitment to innovation and its focus on providing cutting-edge solutions to its users. As the company continues to expand its infrastructure and introduce new technologies, it is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of EV charging and battery swap services in China and beyond.
